The Legend of Zelda Timeline

If you thought this page would be about the timeline of Zelda with my own or anyone else's theories then you are sadly mistaken I will start off by saying it gets much too deep and meaningful and makes for quite the debate amongst people but on the plus side I will be providing the factual events of each Zelda game, which platform it was released on and the worldwide release dates. I might add some of the theories on the whole Zelda story at a later date but I think there is no great official timeline released by Nintendo from start up to date for the reason that people could predict easily what would happen in the sequel or prequel of the games. However take your time to read the timeline below and watch this space for Zelda timeline theories from fans.

The Legend of Zelda - first game

The Legend of Zelda NES

Release Date: 1986 japan flag 1987 america flag 1987 uk flag

The First Game The Legend of Zelda was originally released in 1986 in Japan on the Nintendo Entertainment System otherwise known as The Famicom, short for family computer as it was promoted as. The Adventure of Link - second zelda game released

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link NES

Release Date: 1987 japan flag 1988 america flag 1988 uk flag

The second installment of Zelda a direct sequel without a doubt, despite its visuals, is the Adventure of Link. This was also released on the NES only a year after the original. The storyline continued from the original with the minions of the underworld trying to resurrect the evil Gannon with the Hero Link's blood.

This game caused controversy as the gameplay had changed very dramatically to side scrolling action-adventure with RGP elements mixed in such as earning points to gain an extra level of health. This game was linear which took away the fact that you could complete any dungeon in any random order you had to obtain certain items to aid you and also the enemies confronted in later stages are far too powerful.

Quite possibly this without too much debate would be classified as one of the hardest Zelda adventures in the whole series and if you haven't ever played this I would recommend you spend a countless amount of hours on a classic game.

Link to the Past

The Legend of Zelda - A Link To The Past SNES

Release Date: 1991 japan flag 1992 america flag 1992 uk flag

It took four years before the next Zelda game surfaced which remained quite faithful to the original Zelda with the gameplay returning back to a look down perspective on Link. A Link To The Past was released in the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and again re-released on the Gameboy Advance in 2002.

A Link To The Past is regarding in some people's eyes as the best Zelda in the series and has many fans since its release. There are many similarities to the original Zelda such as despite gathering the 3 medals to lift the Mastersword the dungeons are non-linear and can be completed in the dark world in no particular order until the last battle against Gannon.

This was the first game to distinguish those translation errors possibly that were brought from the original Zelda and claimed the currency in Hyrule as the Rupee.

Links Awakening

The Legend of Zelda - Link's Awakening Gameboy

Links first adventure for the handheld console Nintendo's Gameboy proved to be an instant classic still very much playable today. Links Awakening doesn't take place in the fantasy world of Hyrule instead Link gets shipwrecked and washed up upon an island known as Koholint.

The gameplay and look down view is similar to that of a Link to the past however there are new features and items that allow Link to jump with the Roc's Cape and introduces a musical instrument that would be the initial basis for the ideas of games like The Ocarina of Time learning new songs and using them in certain situations. After seeing Early footage of Link duelling Gannondorf with high res detailed graphics in a short movie shown at Spaceworld 2001 fans were stunned to discover the new way forward for Links latest quest at the time when news surfaced that the graphics would be cel-shaded and with a rather cartoon appearance.

Four Swords
Four Swords

The Legend of Zelda - Four Swords Adventure Gamecube

Release Date: 2004 japan flag 2004 america flag 2005 uk flag

The Four Swords was delayed in the UK until early 2005 possible reasons for this were because there was no competition with the sales of The Minish Cap which was released in the UK around Christmas 2004. The Gameboy Advance can be used as a controller in conjunction with this game in use with a cable that links both components together.

Nintendo Power selected The Four Swords as the 48th best game to ever be made on a Nintendo system. The game can be played from one to four players which features 8 worlds with 3 stages following on to a boss battle. The game adapts a look from A Link to The Past with the overdown look view but also includes some WInd Waker elements.

Some critics stated that the graphics were a rehash of 2D sprites with Gamecube particle effects looking like a GBA game but slightly fancier. Despite the bad remarks The Four Swords Adventures was the third best selling game of June in 2004 in North America.
